Bound to the water bound to land, a Siren’s soul will never be safe on either side of the ocean’s surface. Here's what Tiffany had to tell Writing Belle about the research and inspiration that went into writing her novel!

Inspiration for Surface
You know when someone reads you a story as a child and it sticks with you forever?  Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid was that story for me.  I love the original and I adore the Disney version. But, it wasn`t until I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean on Stranger Tides did I find my mermaid muse.

Research
I like to do my research on the fly. I will start with a concept, write like mad, and leave pockets open for where I need to go back and get more details. Like in the conversation between Luc and Theia when he explains why humans and Artagasians no longer coexist. I tweaked the history I remembered from school (not much) and then I went to good old Google to make sure I`m not steering too far from the facts. I also did quite a bit of research on mermaid folklore, which was probably more just to feed my mermaid obsession.

AUTHOR BIO

Tiffany Daune doesn't get why people want to grow up or why anyone would ever stop eating candy. Her purse is filled with books, lip gloss and a few pieces of Lego bricks. She writes best with a dish of chocolate chips on hand and finds licorice makes a better straw than plastic.

She lives on an island and believes mermaids may be raiding her candy stash, thoughshe hasn't caught them, yet.

Surface is her first novel and pairs well with gummy sharks.

  4. My characters are inspired by experience. They have a little bit of everyone I know and people I've passed along the way. Ultimately, though they are born from my imagination.
